Nick and Phyllis’ daughter has been at the center of plenty of drama but because Summer Newman occasionally comes and goes from THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS, some viewers may find themselves wondering about the details of the young woman's life. Well, that's where we come in!
The result of an affair between Nick Newman and Phyllis Summers, Summer was born December 18, 2006. The role was played by young actress Samantha Bailey from 2009 until 2012 when the character was SORAS-ed into a teenager and recast with Lindsay Bushman. But she was quickly replaced with Hunter King that same year. However, at the beginning of October, 2018, actress Bayley Corman temporarily filled in for King while she was busy for a couple episodes.
Summer has had a tumultuous life on Y&R, starting with being kidnapped at just a few months old by Sheila Carter! As a teen, Summer acted out by experimenting with drinking and drugs and caused a car accident that caused her aunt Chelsea Lawson to miscarry her and Adam’s unborn child. When she fell in love with Austin Travers, she not only tried to go on the run with the hunk, she became his wife so she couldn’t testify against him! Later, Summer was devastated when Austin was murdered, and while solving the mystery, grew closer to Kyle Abbott. But she typically has terrible taste in men, like the scheming Luca Santori, or later, her mother's boyfriend!
King made her debut as Summer in 2012, and in 2013 was placed on contract with the soap. She has been nominated for the Outstanding Younger Actress Daytime Emmy Award five times and took home the trophy in 2014 and 2015. However, she continued to moonlight in other projects, including starring in the critically acclaimed film A Girl Like Her. And unfortunately, when her recurring role on the CBS primetime sitcom LIFE IN PIECES was upgraded to series regular for the show’s second season, King had to drop back to recurring status with Y&R. “So excited to also be joining the LIFE IN PIECES family!” King tweeted when the news of her promotion was announced. “Beyond blessed for this opportunity!”
As a legacy character, Summer is still an important part of the canvas — and now that King is able to balance both her daytime and primetime roles, you'll just have to stay tuned to see what trouble she gets up to next!
