Fans were wondering what’s wrong with Victor on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS, and when he revealed that he has a rare blood disease, they feared the worst. However, this isn’t some made-up soap opera illness — Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria (PNH) is a real thing.
Although rare, PNH is a life-threatening blood disease characterized by the destruction of red blood cells, blood clots, and impaired bone marrow function. Symptoms can include significant fatigue or weakness, easy bruising or bleeding, shortness of breath, recurring infections, severe headache, and blood clots. Although many patients suffering from PNH experience few or no symptoms and can be treated with folic acid and iron supplements, more severe cases can require drug therapy or a bone marrow transplant.
Victor originally kept his illness a secret and sought help from Dr. Nate Hastings. However, Nikki realized something was seriously wrong with her husband and urged him to open up to her. After learning the truth, she pressed him to inform the entire family and Victor finally conceded, explaining his diagnosis to Nick, Victoria, Adam, and Abby. While he’s trying to remain strong in the face of an uncertain future, it’s clear that Victor is struggling to deal with everything. So it’s a good thing that he’s not alone in his fight. Because after the initial treatments failed, he had to switch to an experimental drug that's causing some side effects.
Stay tuned to see how Victor’s story continues, and for more Y&R news, keep reading the CBS edition of Soaps In Depth magazine.
