Veteran actress Peggy McCay has died at the age of 90. The daytime star, best known as Caroline Brady on DAYS OF OUR LIVES, passed away on Oct. 7. “Our dearest Peggy McCay has left us,” Deidre Hall shared on Facebook. “She was a friend, an activist, and a real scrapper! I remember meeting her at the bedside of a dear, very ill friend. I backed her up as she ferociously took on doctors and nurses to make sure she had the very best care. She fought hard for all her causes. Passionate and tireless. And how she loved being Caroline!”
McCay’s career took off when she starred as Vanessa Dale on the soap opera LOVE OF LIFE beginning in 1951. She left in 1955 to appear in numerous primetime television series such as PERRY MASON, MAVERICK, and ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS. She returned to soaps with a role on ABC’s THE YOUNG MARRIEDS in 1964, and when that show was cancelled in 1966, she joined the cast of GENERAL HOSPITAL as Iris Fairchild. After leaving GH in 1970, she continued appearing in film and television until landing the role for which she is most beloved, that of Caroline Brady on DAYS.
Joining the cast of DAYS in 1983, McCay signed a contract with the show in 1985 and continued to play the Brady family matriarch for over 30 years. She was nominated for the Outstanding Lead Actress Daytime Emmy Award four times during her time on DAYS, in 1986, 1987, 2013, and 2015. Her last appearance on the soap was on Aug. 24, 2016.
