What Happened to Hope Adams on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS
Adam definitely takes after his father because Hope Adams on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS was a lovely woman who proved opposites attract when she fell for Victor! The character was introduced in 1993, played by Signy Coleman, who left in 1997 but returned briefly in 2000 and 2002. When the character returned to Y&R in 2006, Hope was briefly portrayed by Beth Toussaint, but it was Coleman who reprised the role for her death in 2008 and some spiritual visits from the afterlife in 2010 and 2012.
Victor Newman left Genoa City behind and ended up in Kansas where he rescued Hope Adams from a rapist. He bonded with the blind woman at her farm and hearing everyone back home believed him dead, decided to stay. When Hope revealed she was engaged to her longtime friend, Cliff Wilson, Victor decided to go, but she had fallen for him and called off her engagement to accompany him back to Genoa City. There, she met Victor’s ex, Nikki Newman, and not wanting to come between them, Hope went home to Kansas.
Following her home, Victor wooed Hope, who confessed she was a virgin. After they made love, he proposed and they returned to Genoa City to be wed. Nikki crashed the wedding but couldn’t prevent them from becoming man and wife. When Hope learned she was pregnant, the happy news was tainted by the doctor’s warning that their baby could inherit her blindness. Victor urged her to have an abortion, but Hope refused and ran away to Kansas where she took up with Cliff again. Victor’s friend, Douglas, followed to urge her to go back to her husband, and during the argument, Hope had a fall and was rushed to the hospital. Victor flew to Kansas to check on her and was there for the birth of their son, Victor Adam Newman, Jr. Upset at Hope’s plan to raise their son on her farm in Kansas, Victor divorced her and returned to Genoa City alone.
In 1996, Victor visited Hope in Kansas and found she’d married Cliff, who had adopted Victor Jr. He was able to spend time with his son, but Cliff was adamant the boy not know Victor was his real father. Victor returned again when Cliff was hit and killed by a drunk driver to bring Hope and Victor Jr. to live with him in Genoa City. However, Hope was uncomfortable in the big city, and she and her son once again returned to Kansas.
When Victor was diagnosed with epilepsy in 2006, he went to visit Hope and try living a simpler life for a while. Unfortunately, he suffered a seizure of which Hope was unaware due to her blindness. Victor continued traveling, and when Hope called to warn him Victor Jr. had disappeared, he tried searching for his son, to no avail. In 2008, Hope revealed that she had been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer, and despite Victor hiring the best doctors, nothing could be done to save her. Victor went to Kansas to say goodbye and was reunited with his son, who was stunned to learn Victor was his real father. Hope passed away with Victor and Vic at her side, and afterward, Victor invited his son to return with him to Genoa City. He agreed but chose to go by the name Adam, instead.
Although she passed away, Hope has made a few visits from the afterlife, first in 2010 when Hope appeared to Adam to warn him that she couldn’t rest in peace knowing all the horrible things he’d done. She also visited Victor at Christmas to show him scenes from his past and help him become a better man. In 2012, while temporarily blind, Adam spoke with his mother’s spirit. Though she hasn’t made another spiritual visit in years, Hope is never far from Adam and Victor’s thoughts.
