DAYS, B&B, and GL Actor Joseph Campanella Dead at 93

Renowned character actor Joseph Campanella has died at the age of 93. The Emmy and Tony Award nominee passed away on May 16 of natural causes. With hundreds of credits to his name, Campanella is best remembered to soap opera fans as the villainous Harper Deveraux on NBC’s DAYS OF OUR LIVES, a role he played from 1987-88. Betrayed by the women in his life, the rich and powerful senator went crazy and began murdering them and the press nicknamed the serial killer the Riverfront Knifer before he was finally sent to prison.

Early in his career, Campanella played a criminal named Joe Turino on CBS soap GUIDING LIGHT, and from 1996 until 2005, he played the recurring role of Forrester family attorney Jonathan Young on THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL. In primetime, the actor could also be seen on soaps like DALLAS, THE COLBYS, KNOTS LANDING and MELROSE PLACE.

Campanella retired from acting in 2009, but before that his familiar face showed up in hundreds of film and television series, but is perhaps best known for his role of Lew Wickersham on MANNIX, which earned him an Emmy Award nomination. He also played Ed Cooper, the ex-husband and father on ONE DAY AT A TIME. He even played David Hasselhoff’s dad on BAYWATCH.

On stage, Campanella received a Tony Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his work opposite Henry Fonda and Olivia de Havilland in the play A Gift of Time. He also did a lot of voice work and could be heard narrating the Disney Channel DISCOVER science series as well as the villain The Lizard on Spider-Man: The Animated Series.
