The Real Reason Why Patrika Darbo’s Daytime Emmy Award Was Revoked

Tags:

At the 2018 Daytime Emmy Awards, the award for Outstanding Guest Performer in a Digital Daytime Drama Series was given to Patrika Darbo for her work as Mickey Walker on THE BAY, however, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has decided to revoke her award. However, despite reports published elsewhere — and quotes from the actress herself — the reason for the award being taken back was not due to the number of episodes submitted but because she had previously appeared on the digital soap opera.

“Following the 45th Daytime Emmy Awards in Pasadena, California,” NATAS said in a statement, “NATAS received a credible report that some entrants’ submissions in two categories may have been in violation of the published guidelines for the competition. NATAS immediately commissioned a thorough internal investigation and determined that Patrika Darbo and Thomas Calabro, both of Amazon’s THE BAY, should have been deemed ineligible for consideration in Outstanding Guest Performer in a Digital Daytime Drama Series as they had each appeared in a prior season of the program.”

Although removing Darbo and Calabro from the category still left Jennifer Bassey (Beverly, ANACOSTIA), Chad Duell (Adam, THE BAY; Michael, GENERAL HOSPITAL), and Mike E. Winfield (Jeremy, CONVERSATIONS IN L.A.) as nominees, NATAS has decided not to recognize a winner in this particular category this year. But they are currently re-examining and re-evaluating the rules regarding submissions in the relatively new Digital Drama Series categories.

“NATAS also investigated whether entrants in this or other categories violated guidelines limiting the number of program episodes from which submitted excerpts could be drawn,” the statement added. “The questioned materials were often fleeting, representing only a single line of dialogue, and their inclusion was deemed not to have impacted the outcome of the competition. Further, in retrospect, the guidelines were not sufficiently reflective of current digital distribution trends, causing ambiguity regarding the submissions’ qualification. The questioned entries will not be penalized for this ambiguity, and the guidelines will be updated for future competitions.”

Darbo, who most recently appeared as Shirley Spectra on THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL, was nominated in 2000 for her work as Nancy Wesley on DAYS OF OUR LIVES. She also won a primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series in 2016 for playing Margot Mullen on ACTING DEAD.
