Details have now emerged about the car crash that critically injured Nathaniel Marston (Eddie, AS THE WORLD TURNS; Al/Michael, ONE LIFE TO LIVE) over the weekend. According to a press release issued via the actor's Web site, a preliminary investigation has led police to believe that a fatigued Marston fell asleep while driving. Authorities say that neither drugs nor alcohol were a factor. "The vehicle drifted into the opposite lane, and it is believed that when Marston awoke, he over-corrected, causing his pickup truck to flip over several times," reads the statement. Because Marston was not wearing a seatbelt, "he was ejected through the windshield and, upon landing, crushed several vertebrae in his neck and back. Remarkably, he suffered no head trauma."
Initially, doctors believed that if Marston survived, he would be paralyzed from the neck down and not be able to breathe on his own. But after a successful first surgery, his prognosis has "brightened considerably. Marston regained consciousness for a short while, understood the situation and was clear-headed enough to make medical decisions for himself. There will be more surgeries in the near future, but it is now believed that with significant physical therapy, the actor should be able to regain function of his upper body." However, it is too soon to tell if or when he will ever be able to walk again.
In her latest Facebook update, Marston's mother, Elizabeth Jackson, revealed that he was scheduled for another surgery this afternoon. "His last surgery, to alleviate pressure on the spine, went very well, and Nate is taking some breaths on his own," she wrote. "Today, doctors will do their best to repair breaks in his neck and stabilize his neck. Thank you again for your love, prayers and support. I will update everyone as soon as I have more news. Warm wishes from me, my family and Nathaniel."
