Mal Young Confirms He’s Leaving THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS

Behind the scenes shake-ups could mean some changes to Genoa City now that Mal Young is leaving THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS. He first joined Y&R as a supervising producer in 2016 and was made executive producer shortly after that. In 2017, Young was also named the new headwriter of the soap. But now he is making his exit.

“Just arrived in London for the holidays,” he said in a statement published on Showbiz411.com. “I felt like it was a good time to move on. Never a good idea to get too settled on a long-running soap and I achieved all that I and CBS set out to do: Improved scripts and production values. I have a project of my own that I’ve been developing and want to pursue that now. Plus, running a show like this is all-consuming and I want to get a bit of my life back — and see my family occasionally!”

Young came to the American soap industry from the UK where he was the Controller of Continuing Drama Series for the BBC overseeing shows like EASTENDERS, DOCTORS, CASUALTY, and more. Over the past year, there have been quite a few high-profile exits from Y&R of which Young is now the most recent. While viewers can look forward to new leadership in 2019, there have been no official announcements from Y&R as to who will be stepping into either the executive producer or headwriter positions.

Stay tuned as this story develops, and for more Y&R news, keep reading the CBS edition of Soaps In Depth magazine.
